Thriving Communities

Hosted in Windhoek Namibia in 2018, the second AfriCHI conference had the theme “Thriving Communities”. This theme recognised that thriving meant growing, developing, living healthily, having sufficient access to resources including technological resources and nurturing social capabilities toward collective empowerment, The theme reflected the thriving of local African communities that researchers and practitioners have engaged with. Although the format stayed mostly the same as AfriCHI 2016, local community elders and representatives participated alongside the researchers and practitioners. The first week-long Africa HCI Summer school was launched before the conference and participants gained first-hand practical experience in community co-design (https://doi.org/10.1145/3344945).
