Inclusiveness and Empowerment
The third AfriCHI conference had the theme “Inclusiveness and Empowerment” and was hosted in Maputo, Mozambique. While originally planned for 2020, it took place in 2021 to adapt to constraints on international travel due to COVID-19. The conference theme recognised the need to expand further the participation of Africans in the practice and study of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Interaction Design (IxD) and to advance HCI by increasing awareness of designs, tools, inventions, methods, theories and pedagogies for creating or using technology, for the benefit of society on the African continent and beyond. The conference, which covers pre-conference activities like doctoral and masters colloquium, and workshops, and main activities like research presentations and panels was fully online-enabled by technologies such as YouTube, Zoom on worksup.com. Professor Isaias Barreto da Rosa from Cape Verde in his opening keynote talked about Digital disruption, inclusion, and economic development in Africa, while Professor Anicia Peters, from the University of Namibia, shared her experience and insights in her closing keynote.
